Sarah Paulson will star in the HBO Max scripted adaptation of its docuseries The Way Down: God, Greed, and the Cult of Gwen Shamblin, Deadline reports. Shamblin was a charismatic figure with a carefully curated image who rose to fame with her Weigh Down Workshop, a Christian-based diet program, while also founding the Remnant Fellowship Church. Shamblin was then accused of exploitation and emotional, psychological, and physical abuse through the church’s alleged cult-like practices....

Sean Astin is returning to Supergirl for tonight’s episode. The actor guest-starred in an episode before the Crisis on Infinite Earths took place as Kelly’s old friend Pete Andrews from the Army. However, Astin’s Pete character wasn’t who he seemed to be. We later found out that he was actually Malefic, J’onn’s evil brother in disguise. Thankfully, Astin’s Pete Andrews character gets to be himself this time around, which should keep it interesting for Astin, who is a major fan of the Supergirl TV series....

The city of Los Angeles will be invaded by aliens on the silver screen with two upcoming films, Universal’s Skyline, due in theaters November 12, and Sony’s Battle: Los Angeles, which will be released on March 11, 2011, and both films could be at the center of a legal battle, according to Deadline New York. A lawsuit hasn’t been filed yet, but the site is reporting that Sony is considering taking legal action against Universal and Relativity Media due to the similar themes of both films....

The horror movie Smile has proven to be one of the year’s best films for the genre with its box office profits continuing to climb. Sony is following Toshiba in the price cutting game. In a story from Home Media Magazine, it seems that “Sony Computer Entertainment America will bring its 40GB PlayStation 3, which just shipped in Europe, to the United States on Nov. 2.” Though this isn’t official it looks like this new “40GB PS3 will retail for $400, which is $200 less than the new 80GB PS3, which retails for $600 and comes bundled with the MotorStorm game....

The pair of Avengers will unite (before eventually dividing it seems) in order to tackle the emerging multiverse, which has begun to split and bleed into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, unleashing a whole host of Spidey supervillains from franchises past. While it might appear that The Sorcerer Supreme and Peter Parker are working together on these posters, this may not be the case....

ZOMBIELAND KILLS It was the weekend in which Zombielandmade a killing at the box office. The comedy/horror film, which on the whole received positive reviews, piled up $25 million in ticket sales. Two other new movies, however, which also received generally favorable reviews, flopped. Ricky Gervais’s The Invention of Lyingmanaged to bring in $7.4 million, while Drew Barrymore’s Whip It landed in sixth place with just $4.9 million, tying with Michael Moore’s documentary, Capitalism: A Love Story, which widened its release to about 1,000 theaters....
