FRESTON OUT AT VIACOM Viacom Chairman Sumner Redstone, who reportedly severed Viacom’s ties with Tom Cruise last month without informing Viacom CEO Tom Freston of his decision, is now parting ways with Freston himself. The company said today (Tuesday) that Freston has quit and that he’ll be replaced by longtime industry executive Philippe Dauman. Freston became CEO and president of Viacom last January when Redstone spun off its broadcast television operations into a separate company, CBS Corp....

Supergirl season 4 is tackling the Superman: Red Son comic book storyline. The Season 3 finale just aired on The CW and, as with most season finales for the network’s DC shows, it came with some big action and some big reveals. While the episode did put a button on much of what has been going on in the series this season, it also set the stage for a major storyline next season, which has been confirmed by showrunners Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller....

DC Comics, the largest English language publisher of comic books worldwide, and Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Superman Returns director Bryan Singer and Superman Returns screenwriters Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris are providing the plots to four comic book prequels to Superman Returns. The four forty-page comic book prequels will be published by DC Comics throughout the month of June and will bridge the gap between the first Superman film and Superman Returns, which premieres in theatres on June 30, 2006....

Lindsay Lohan is the latest actress to be rumored for a major role in Zack Snyder’s Superman. Though the role has been undisclosed, it will not be Lois Lane. Lead singer of the Beach Boys, Brian Wilson has signed a deal with Mark Gordon to produce a film based on his life story. Variety notes Gordon is teaming with filmmaker David Leaf and Wilson’s managers Ronnie Lippin and Jean Sievers to construct a package that will include rights to Wilson’s vast catalog of songs. They will set a writer shortly and then take the package out to studios. Wilson’s songs about surfing, girls and cars, and eventually mature love songs plus soaring harmonies made the Beach Boys’ sound the one that defined Southern California rock music in the 1960s....

Academy Award-winning filmmaker Roman Polanski is to direct his first contemporary thriller in more than twenty years. His new project, The Ghost, will begin shooting in Berlin in two weeks’ time, on February 4th. The movie tells the story of a former British Prime Minister, Adam Lang, (played by Pierce Brosnan) who is holed up on an island off the Eastern seaboard of the USA in midwinter, writing his memoirs. When his long-standing aide drowns, a professional ghostwriter (played by Ewan McGregor) is sent out to help him finish the book....

At this year’s Governor’s Awards, Samuel L. Jackson received an honorary Oscar from Denzel Washington. The two actors go way back from their early theatre days in New York. After the actor won the Oscar, he started to speak but ran over to Denzel to give him a bear hug.
