Apple officially announced at the Television Critics Association’s winter 2023 that Ted Lasso would return for a new season in spring 2023. A power outage caused a minor delay in shooting on the set of The Amazing Spider-Man today, as three crew members were trapped on top of a frozen crane. None of the three men, who were trying to replace the wooden roof of a building in Chinatown, were injured in the accident. The men were stuck at the top of this boom lift for more than two hours, parked on Market Street near downtown New York City....

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a turbocharged sequel loaded with good humor and impressive visual effects. The anthropomorphized CGI characters hold their own against the always hilarious Jim Carrey. His Dr. Robotnik super villain machinations had me laughing out loud in multiple scenes. Themes of family, friendship, and the true meaning of heroism add heartwarming lessons to wholesome entertainment. My only gripe is the film’s length. I can’t fathom why Sonic 2 has a two hour and two-minute runtime....

Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter spilled a few intriguing details about what is happening in Charming, California in Season 6 of the FX biker drama. The new episodes will feature two new characters that haven’t been cast yet. One is described as an, “an old-school shot-caller that’s out of Stockton,” while the other character is a female who is, “in sort of the escort world.” Season 5 star Jimmy Smits (Nero) is returning as a series regular, and Donal Logue (Lee Toric) has also been confirmed for at least seven episodes....

Spider-Man: No Way Home spent its fourth weekend on top of the box office after bringing in $33 million. As of this writing, the sequel is now the eighth highest grossing global movie of all time with over $1.5 billion in ticket sales. Bob Anderson, Olympic fencer and movie sword master who donned Darth Vader’s helmet for all of the light saber fight scenes in Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi, has passed away at the age of 89. Cause of death was not disclosed to the public. Bob Anderson worked as a sword master, fight director, and stunt performer for over five decades in cinema, appearing alongside Errol Flynn, Antonio Banderas, and Mark Hamill....

Stephen Gaghan is set to write the adaptation of Dead Spy Running, an espionage novel by British author Jon Stock, that McG is directing for Warner Bros. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film is meant to be the first in a trilogy and aims to reinvent the spy genre by telling the origin story of a newly trained spy in a tone that mixes the grittiness of The Bourne Identity with the wittiness of John Le Carre’s oeuvre....

NETFLIX REPORTS RECORD PROFITS; STOCK SINKS Online movie renters Netflix reported spectacular results in its first quarter but quickly warned investors that they were not likely to last. The company reported profits of $13.4 million on revenue of $326 million, up a whopping 36 percent over the same quarter a year ago when it reported net income of $9.9 million on revenue of $305 million. Everything appeared to have gone right for the company....

MOVIE REVIEWS: GEORGE A. ROMERO’S DIARY OF THE DEAD Zombies in tow, George A. Romero returns to the screen with Diary of the Dead,with a plot and hand-held-camera technique that several critics note are much like Cloverfield. The difference, says Manohla Dargis in the New York Times, is that Romero’s film is “a lot cheaper-looking, generally smarter-sounding and a whole lot funnier.” Michael Phillips in the Chicago Tribunealso observes that while the shaky “syndrome kept Cloverfieldon the run,” Romero’s film is “more provocatively handled … and is funny and sad and rather sweet as zombie pictures go....

CYRUS BEST OF NON-SUPER BOWL WORLD The only thing harder than a Super Bowl ticket to get hold of over the weekend was one to a screening of Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert. The movie, which played on only 683 screens, took in an estimated $29 million, or an average of $42,500 per theater. Analysts could not recall any film opening in fewer than 1,000 theaters performing as well....
