ICAHN TO BATTLE LIONS GATE Never one to shrink from a proxy battle, Carl Icahn on Wednesday broke off talks with Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. after the company’s board of directors refused to give his designees seats on the board. Icahn’s action appears to set the stage for him to ally with sympathetic board members (he is a close friend of Mark Rachesky, head of MHR Fund Management, Lions Gate’s biggest stockholder) in a fight to take control of the company that is best known as the producers of the Sawhorror films, the Tyler Perry flicks, and the cable-TV shows Mad Menand Weeds....

i>THUNDER REIGNS WHILE GUSTAV RAINS The four-day Labor Day holiday, ordinarily a lackluster one at the box office, lacked even more luster than usual this year, as the top film, DreamWorks/Paramount’s Tropic Thunder took in just $14.3 million. Last year, Halloweenopened with $30.6 million, a record for the holiday. It was the sixth consecutive weekend that the box office produced totals lower than last year. “Kind of an underwhelming end to a great summer,” Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office trackers Media by Numbers, told the Associated Press....

NBC’S PEACOCK STRUTS AGAIN Even as many critics continued to predict disaster for NBC’s fall lineup, the network claimed the top spot in the ratings for the fifth consecutive week thanks to its NFL and RNC coverage. The season debut of Sunday Night Football drew 18.35 million viewers, while Thursday’s NFL kickoff game drew 13.53 million. NBC was also the top broadcast network at the Republican National Convention, attracting 8.65 million for its coverage of John McCain’s acceptance speech Thursday night....

You can bring home a very different sort of family on DVD and Blu-Ray this August. Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles: The Complete First Season is coming to DVD and Blu-Ray on August 19. The three-disc set will contain all nine episodes of the first season and will be priced at $29.98 SRP in standard and $39.99 in Blu-Ray. The series stars Lena Headey, Thomas Dekker and Summer Glau. Peanuts began as a comic strip created by Charles M. Schulz in 1950. The four-panel strip featured the events of main character Charlie Brown and his friends. The strip proved immensely popular, and would later inspire a Christmas-themed animated special in 1965; the special’s success would prompt more specials, shows, and movies up to the present. Peanuts has remained an incredibly influential and beloved creation, in the worlds of both comics and television, with specials that have entertained viewers for generations....

The first trailer for the new adaptation of Stephen King’s The Boogeyman has arrived, bringing with it a first look at the latest King offering to hit the big screen. Based on the short story of the same name from King’s Night Shift story collection, the film adapts the story’s basic premise and takes it in a different direction. The Boogeyman was initially planned to be released straight to streaming, but thanks to a series of impressive test screenings, the horror movie was promoted to a theatrical run starting on June 2, 2023....

The Boys will be getting Diabolical in March. Ahead of the premiere of The Boys: Diabolical, an animated series that serves as a spinoff of the superhero satire The Boys, Prime Video has released a first look teaser for the show. Along with its official premiere date set for March 4, the video unveils the animation style that looks a bit like classic cartoons. However, the bloody violence that the live-action series is known for is also on full display....

The Crow director Alex Proyas has announced his upcoming horror-thriller Sister Darkness. The upcoming feature will be the first under a co-production/financing partnership between U.K.-based 108 Media, Proyas’ production house Heretic Foundation and his IP development company Mystery Clock Cinema. It is currently up for sale in the Cannes Market. The film is described as a “macabre female-driven fever dream of revenge and gothic terror.” It takes place in 1930s UK, a time in history when women were marginalized and exploited....

In a tease of the upcoming Arrowverse crossover event, “Elseworlds,” DC and the CW have released the first look at Batwoman, played by actress Ruby Rose. Rose will be playing this female Caped Crusader for the three episode run of the “Elseworlds” crossover event, and has potential to have her own series down the road. Ruby Rose was first announced to be playing Katherine Kane / Batwoman earlier this year. This announcement was met with both positive and negative responses, much like most other superhero casting announcements....

As someone who has been part of the MCU since the beginning, Samuel L. Jackson will be the longest serving actor of the franchise when Secret Invasion arrives on Disney+, and the man who brings Nick Fury to life on screen has been teasing that we may also see “Young Nick Fury” again in the upcoming series. Having played a prominent role in the Marvel story for so long, Secret Invasion will finally see Fury as the lead character, and it looks set to be another action-packed entry to the franchise....

Universal Studios Home Entertainment held a special event at the Belasco Theater in downtown Los Angeles last night to celebrate this high-def release, which featured exquisite gourmet Cuban food, a performance by Ludacris, and lavish setting which Tony Montana would have surely approved of. Despite all these bells and whistles, most in attendance were likely drawn to the event for a Q&A session with actors Al Pacino, Steven Bauer, F. Scott Derrickson is known for his work in the horror genre, delivering several truly terrifying experiences to audiences.
