SCI FI Channel has greenlit to production WCG GameQuest (working title), an 8-episode elimination-style reality competition, pitting 12 contestants against each other in a series of video game challenges in order to find the “Best All-Around Gamer” in the United States. Shot on location in Los Angeles, GameQuest is slated to premiere on SCI FI in the first quarter of 2009. The series features top game titles from various studios and includes physical challenges that bring video games to life, as well as elimination challenges in an arena before hundreds of spectators....

Wes Craven’s Scream (1996) was lauded for being one of the scariest and bloodiest films of its time, initially given an NC-17 rating by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). After much contrition, the film would go forward, but the deaths would still come in full force. WarnerMedia announced it will air the half-hour special, Sesame Street: Elmo’s Playdate, simultaneously across HBO, HBO Latino, TBS, TNT, truTV, Cartoon Network and Boomerang on Tuesday, April 14 (7:00-7:30 p.m. ET/PT). The special will also air on PBS KIDS at the same time, and will later air internationally in Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Part of Sesame Workshop’s Caring for Each Other initiative, the special is aimed at helping kids and families around the world feel connected in this time of uncertainty and features everyone’s favorite Sesame Street friends and celebrity guests including Lin-Manuel Miranda, Anne Hathaway and Tracee Ellis Ross....

Starz Entertainment today announced start of production on two original series, Hollywood Residential and Head Case. The announcement comes off of Starz successful foray into original programming earlier this year with the first season launch of Head Case and continues the network’s commitment to quality entertainment. “While movies will always be our core business at Starz, we are excited to be expanding our original programming with celebrity driven shows like Hollywood Residential and Head Case to offer even more to the Starz subscribers,” said Michael Ruggiero, VP of Programming at Starz....

Starz announced today that it will develop a new original drama series from The Newsroom writer Gideon Yago with Executive Producer Rob Tapert. Airborne is a coming of age story set at the dawn of the Vietnam War. The series follows a young helicopter crew as they fight for survival, sanity, their souls, and each other in a country - and war - that are descending into chaos. The new original series will be produced by Starz with Executive Producer Rob Tapert (Spartacus, Evil Dead, Xena: Warrior Princess, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys) and Producer Aaron Lam....

Stephen Root has been making America laugh on both the small screen and silver screen for decades now. After cutting his teeth with small roles in film and television, the actor landed the gig of the eccentric Jimmy James on the hit comedy series NewsRadio in 1995 and movie fans took notice with his legendary performance as Milton Waddams in the cult classic comedy Office Space. Stranger Things creators, the Duffer Brothers (Matt and Ross), had initially planned to kill off Steve Harrington (Joe Keery) in season 1. Matt even reveals during an interview that when Steve comes back to fight the Demogorgon, it was actually supposed to be Joyce Byers’ ex-husband, Lonnie Byers (Ross Partridge), instead of Steve. Funny enough, the brothers can’t recall how his death was meant to occur. Matt adds that the show is a living thing that keeps adapting based on cast, writers and directors’ input; not everything is written in stone....

MORE TREASURE IN STORE AT BOX OFFICE No new films are scheduled to open wide this weekend, leaving a clear field for National Treasure: Book of Secrets, starring Nicolas Cage, to repeat as the No. 1 film. Traditionally, films that open over the Christmas holiday do not suffer the usual decline of 50-percent or more in ticket sales during their second weekend. Treasure, which opened with $44.8 million over the three-day weekend last week, is expected to take in $35-40 million this weekend....

i>ENCHANTED WINS; BOX OFFICE LOSES During a weekend when box-office business traditionally sinks, the top earner was the three-week-old Enchantedwith just $17 million, according to studio estimates. SANTA CLAUS IS NO BIG DEAL ON NBC Television viewers Monday night were more interested in seeing what was inside all those cases on Deal or No Dealthan in watching another tale about Santa Claus. The game show drew a solid 10.0 rating and a 15 share in the ratings at 8:00 p.m. But audiences deserted the network at 9:00 p.m., when it aired an original holiday special, The Year Without a Santa Claus, which averaged a 4....

In a story from The Hollywood Reporter, Summit Entertainment is in talks to pick up the feature film rights to Andrew Klavan’s book series Homelanders. Lorenzo Di Bonaventura and his Di Bonaventura Pictures company are coming aboard to produce the adaptation. Klavan is known for writing such thrillers as True Crime which became a movie with Clint Eastwood, but this marks his first series for the young-adult market. The story follows a high school student who wakes up tied to a chair....

Most sports documentaries professedly follow that familiar narrative arc: the rise – the success – the fall – the rebuild – the success and retention. These documentaries more or less tap into the audience’s hunger for that endorphin kick, the feel-good factor when the little guy conquers Everest against all odds, when the impossible meets the possible. Yet, what happens when a documentary doesn’t meet our Hollywood-ending expectations? When the intended storyline takes a turn for the worse, not the better?...
