Showtime is picking up its hit comedy series SMILF for a second season, it was announced today by Gary Levine, President of Programming, Showtime Networks Inc. Created, starring and executive produced by Frankie Shaw, SMILF is a raw, honest look at the life of a 20-something single mom based on her Sundance Film Festival Jury Award-winning short film of the same name. The series also stars multiple Emmy winner Rosie O’Donnell in her first series regular TV role....

Earlier today at the CBS Upfront presentation at Carnegie Hall, Sonequa Martin-Green, star of Star Trek Discovery, unveiled the first look trailer and key art of the new series. The return of the famed franchise will premiere in the U.S. on CBS All Access this fall, following a broadcast premiere on the CBS Television Network. Additionally, the series will feature 15 episodes, up from the previously announced 13, and include a companion after-show, “Talking Trek,” presented on CBS All Access....

Earlier this month, we reported that Showtime, Microsoft’s XBox Entertainment Studios and executive producer Steven Spielberg are teaming up for a new Halo TV series. Today, Microsoft and 343 Studios revealed that the series will debut in the fall of 2015, alongside the launch of their new video game, Halo 5: Guardians. Steven Spielberg’s upcoming film The Fabelmans is a deeply personal one. Deadpool was a surprise hit for Fox at its release, which probably hoped to re-stabilize the turbulent X-Men series. The film was in development hell before the test footage for the film leaked and forced the studio into production. The film starring Ryan Reynolds was critically praised and was a commercial success for the studio. The fans were delighted to see Reynolds in the most authentic iteration of Deadpool, making meta-jokes and breaking the fourth wall, unlike his restricted and poorly-written role in X-Men Origins: Wolverine....

The biblical comedy Evan Almighty, which reportedly cost $200 million or more to make, opened with only $31.2 million, and some analysts were predicting that the Universal movie would not earn $100 million during its domestic run. On the other hand, the MGM horror flick 1408, which cost only $25 million to make, debuted with $20....

PARAMOUNT’S PEAK IS LOWERED Seeming to reflect the current credit crunch and investor wariness, Paramount announced Wednesday that it had cut the number of films it will release next year to 20 from about 26, with 2-4 of them being produced by DreamWorks Animation and Marvel Studios and 4 by its specialty unit, Paramount Vantage. Reports indicated that the layoffs and voluntary departures of DreamWorks staffers will result in an annual savings of $50 million for the studio....

DANCING FINALE DRAWS SEASON’S BEST RATINGS The season finale of ABC’s Dancing With the Stars contest,won by actress-model Brooke Burke, drew the best numbers for any regular show of the season Tuesday night, averaging 20.58 million viewers over its two hours. FRENCH COMPANY HOLDS NBC’S FATE IN ITS HANDS Vivendi, the French water-company-turned-media-conglomerate, may control the fate of NBC Universal, the New York Times reported today (Monday), noting that a little-known clause in its contract with GE gives it veto power on any change in control of the company. It has been widely reported that GE, which bought 80 percent of Vivendi’s holdings in NBC Universal in 2004, wants to sell the studio and TV company to cable provider Comcast....

BASEBALL FIRES UP RATINGS The bats of the West Coast teams, the Angels and Dodgers, may have become as cold as the weather in Philadelphia and New York in the games played there, but their post-season games with the Phillies and Yankees so far have fired up the ratings. Total viewers for each of the games is up an average of more than 50 percent over last year, with Saturday’s daytime game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies showing an 88-percent improvement....

Hustle & Flow duo Terrence Howard and director Craig Brewer are teaming at Paramount Pictures on a biopic of singer Charley Pride, according to Variety. As Joaquin Phoenix did in Walk the Line, Howard will sing the country icon’s songs and play guitar in the drama. Born to sharecroppers in Mississippi, Pride dreamed of playing professional baseball. He played in the Negro Leagues before joining the Army. After being discharged, he moved to Montana where he worked in construction and continued to play minor league ball....

Marvel’s upcoming superhero ensemble The Avengers will be shooting in Cleveland, Ohio and in the areas surrounding Cuyahoga County, marking the largest movie project to ever shoot in that state. We reported last month that The Avengers pulled out of shooting in Detroit, after the state government proposed a bill that would drastically cut tax credit incentives for movie productions. It seems The Avengers has now found a suitable replacement for Detroit....

Before the Neil Gaiman story The Sandman was turned into a successful series adaptation at Netflix, there were originally plans for the show to be developed for network television. Eric Kripke, who created the hit sci-fi show Supernatural and now serves as the showrunner for The Boys, had been attached to bring the planned series to life for Warner Bros. Television. Ultimately, Gaiman was not left feeling confident with the game plan that was in place for The Sandman in that form, and that version of the project fizzled....

If there was anyone going to take a shot at the painful re-release of Morbius in cinemas, then it was going to be The Boys. For some reason, Sony executives made the decision to bring Morbius back to theaters after the film became a constant trend on social media. While it is not unusual for the internet to play a part in some releases – such as Zack Snyder’s Justice League – Morbius’ reason for trending was by no means complimentary, and when the film reopened in over 1000 cinemas domestically, it scraped together just $300,000 to add to its original box office disappointment of $164 million....
