PLUNDERING PIRATES SETS SAIL ON DVD Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chestwent on sale today (Tuesday), with some outlets offering it at midnight sales. (A Wal-Mart ad read: “They’re closed. RATINGS DIP FOR OSCARSRatings for Sunday night’s Oscar telecast were down about 10 percent from last year – a decline far less dramatic than many analysts had predicted. RATING THE VNU BLOODBATH What started as a trickle of high-profile editorial firings at The Hollywood Reporter last week will expand to a flood of 4,000 layoffs at Netherlands-based VNU, company CEO David Calhoun indicated Monday. The massive firings are intended to reduce costs by 10 percent (the 4,000 layoffs represent about 10 percent of VNU employees). STUDY: COMPUTERS TO REPLACE TV’S A new study has made the startling conclusion that as much as 20 percent of TV viewing now occurs online. The study, from Integrated Media Measurement Inc., also found that of that 20 percent, about half now use their computers as a substitute for their TV sets. The other half use it to watch program episodes that they have missed (“catch-up” viewing) or have already seen (“fill-in”)....
